Our HistoryOur history

When Al Shaw moved from Brighton with his family to begin a Newfrontiers church plant in Bristol, he could only have dreamed the ripple effect this would have. Beginning with a relatively small number of predominantly young people (plus Jeff and Frances, effectively grandparents to everyone!), Al created a vibrant, life giving church in a few short years. From this beginning, a further church plant was created in the north of Bristol – now the Bridge Community Church – of which Jeff was an elder. From Bridge a further church plant is now being developed – Hope Church Bristol – with high hopes for the future.

It was from this excellent base that Jeff and Frances Steady moved on retirement to Malvern in February 2007. Church planting was very much on their minds. Very soon a number of saints joined the initiative – and the rest is history. Here we are in 2010 with Weekly Sunday meetings, weeknight life groups, seasons of prayer evenings, frequent social gatherings, Alpha and other courses for the community, and a track record of innovative outreach events. These included at different times, clowns, statues and mimes, hundreds of balloons released, a gigantic fun day on a local estate on a gorgeous summers day, a street escapologist and a three day marquee event on a scroching day on a local housing estate.

In all this we have been ably guided by Richard Thomas of Worcester Hope Church, Nick Todd of Bridge Community Church. Other gifted people from various Newfrontiers churches have had significant ongoing input to our Early Leadership Team (now our Leadership Team). On many occasions we have been substantially supported by these churches. There has also been significant input from Newfrontiers centrally through training courses and conferences.

The journey has been challenging, hard work, and full of fun and enjoyment. Beginning with occasional home based meetings, we gradually moved to meeting one Sunday, then two Sundays a month at the Malvern Rugby Club. In January 2010, we took a major step in faith, with weekly Sunday morning meetings at Club Dance, in Spring Lane, Malvern Link. From January 2011 our venue for Sunday meetings has been The Mount Pleasant Hotel, Belle Vue, Great Malvern (see 'where we meet' page for more information). We have from the start been embraced wonderfully by both the local community and Churches Together in Malvern. We have partnered effectively with Lyttelton Well in a number of Alpha, marriage and parenting course initiatives.

So we thank God for the progress made, such as it is. But there is a long way to go. To judge by our history, our future looks intriguing to say the least.
